Description
For several years, Rycote InVision mounts have been available for narrow-barrelled shotgun and stick microphones in broadcast and videography applications, but not until 2010, and the release of the striking Universal Studio Mount (USM) was there an InVision shock-mount capable of accommodating large-diaphragm recording microphones for use in recording studios.

Like the other InVision mounts, the USM-L makes use of Rycote's patented vibration-resistant Lyre mount, but on this mount the W-shaped Lyres are placed around a central mounting ring with adjustable fasteners, allowing the USM to accommodate microphone between 18 and 55 mm in diameter, and up to 400 grammes in weight.

The Rycote USM updates the concept of the microphone suspension for the 21st century, completely omitting any elasticated parts and using modern materials to create a virtually indestructible shock-mount with a performance that far outstrips that of the humble 'cat's cradle' suspension. In controlled tests at the Rycote factory, the USM provided up to twice the isolation of traditional microphone suspension systems.

Device Compatibility

  1. audiotechnica AT 3525
The AT3525 offers outstanding performance and versatility, a flat frequency response, and high SPL handling capability. It features a switchable 80Hz high-pass filter and 10dB pad, and includes a multi-position shock-mount.
  2. røde NT1
A large capsule (25mm) condenser microphone with a JFET impedance converter and bipolar output buffer. The diaphragm is gold-sputtered and mounted on an internal shock-mounting assembly.
  3. audiotechnica AT 3060
A large-diaphragm tube design that does not need a dedicated power supply - it operates from 48V phantom power. The cardioid back-electret condenser element provides high sensitivity and smooth reproduction with low noise levels. The tube is hand-selected and shock-mounted, and the precision-machined, nickel-plated brass acoustic element baffle provides enhanced element stability. A large coupling transformer provides superior low-frequency linearity.
  4. beyerdynamic MC 840
A compact large-diaphragm studio microphone with a variable polar pattern. It has gold vapour-coated double diaphragms and is based on the MC740 design but with improved low-noise transformerless electronics.
  5. audiotechnica AE 2500-c
A revolutionary dual-element design with dynamic and back-electret condenser elements fitted into a single housing. Designed with kick drums in mind the elements are positioned in a perfect phase relationship, the dynamic delivering the aggressive attack and the condenser capturing the tonalities of the shell.

The outputs are not combined and are available individually on an XLR-5M.The pad and HPF operate only on the condenser element. Specifications shown are for the condenser element - see AE2500-d for the dynamic capsule spec.
  6. audiotechnica ATM 250
A single capsule kick drum microphone using a dynamic element and capable of handling very high SPLs. The capsule uses a neodymium magnet assembly for high output and has good off-axis rejection.
  7. audiotechnica AT 4033a/CL
The AT4033a/Cl is recommended for professional recording and critical applications in broadcast and live sound. Its symmetrical, transformerless electronics produce clean output signals and exceptional transient response, while its floating-construction element provides isolation from noise and vibration. It also offers a switchable 80Hz high-pass filter. The specially-contoured, aged diaphragm is gold-plated.
  8. audiotechnica ATM 250DE-d
A kick-drum microphone with a dual element - a dynamic hypercardioid and an electret condenser cardioid. The capsules are available separately at the 5-pin output connector. The phase relationship of the two are aligned and the combined result can give both punch and wide frequency response. Specs are given for the two elements -c and -d.
  9. røde NT2
A multi-pattern large diaphragm condenser microphone with JFET impedance converter and bipolar output buffer. The dual gold-sputtered diaphragms allow both omni and cardioid polar patterns.
  10. audiotechnica AT 2020
An economically priced side-address studio microphone. It has wide dynamic range and high SPL handling and thus requires no pad or gain switch. The fixed cardioid polar pattern capsule uses a 16mm low-mass diaphragm.
  11. audiotechnica AT 4040
An externally-polarized (DC bias) true condenser design for professional recording and critical applications in broadcast and live sound. It has a technically-advanced large diaphragm tensioned specifically to provide smooth, natural sonic characteristics. The microphone uses transformerless circuitry which virtually eliminates low-frequency distortion and provides superior correlation of high-speed transients. The symmetrical housing assembly minimizes unwanted internal reflections.
  12. audiotechnica AT 3035
A condenser microphone with a large diaphragm (26 mm) for exceptional detail and low noise. It has high max SPL, wide dynamic range and an optimised output level to provide unmatched versatility. The low self-noise makes it perfectly suited for today's most sophisticated digital recording equipment. It has extended low-frequency response and a custom shock mount for superior isolation.
  13. audiotechnica ATM 250DE-c
  14. audiotechnica AT 4047/SV
Designed for professional recording and critical applications in broadcast and live sound, the AT4047/SV has a transformer-coupled output and specially-tuned element, which provide sonic characteristics reminiscent of early FET studio microphone designs. It offers exceptionally low self-noise, wide dynamic range and high SPL capability, and has gold-plated, specially-contoured and aged, dual-diaphragms.

    Switchable 80Hz hi-pass filter and 10dB pad.
  15. røde NT1000
An externally polarised 1' pressure gradient condenser for studio use. It uses a closed-loop unity-gain impedance converter with JFET input and balanced bipolar output to give exceptionally low noise levels.
  16. røde Broadcaster
A fixed cardioid pattern microphone with a 1' transducer. It uses a JFET impedance converter with bipolar output buffer. The response is tailored for close speech use. A status indicator LED controlled by remote switch closure, and using extra contacts on the XLR-5 connector, makes this device eminently suitable for live on-air work.
  17. audiotechnica AT 2035
A 'budget-friendly' studio microphone with a large diaphragm and a fixed cardioid pattern. The design uses a fixed-charge bakplate large diaphragm capsule.
  18. neumann TLM 102
The TLM 102 is impressive in terms of sound: In the interior is a newly developed large-diaphragm capsule (cardioid) with a maximum sound pressure level of 144 dB, which permits the recording of percussion, drums, amps and other very loud sound sources, for example. Instruments that are not especially loud also benefit from the very fast transient response of the TLM 102. However its most important applications are in the realm of vocals and speech; a slight boost above 6 kHz provides for excellent presence of the voice in the overall mix. Up to 6 kHz the frequency response is extremely linear, ensuring minimal coloration and a clearly defined bass range. The capsule has an elastic suspension for the suppression of structure-borne noise. A pop screen integrated into the grille serves to suppress plosives in vocal and speech recording.
