  • Acoustic transparency
  • Integral synthetic fur cover for excellent wind noise reduction
  • All Classic-Softie windshields are handmade in the U.K.
Description
The Softie Windshield provides a quick, simple, robust and cost effective windshield for the tough environment of modern day ENG and location recording.

The Softie Windshield is a slip-on open-cell foam, with integral fur cover. The Softie will reduce wind-noise, protect your mic and is the standard world wide in TV. Softie windshields are available in a large range of sizes to fit most popular shotgun microphones.

Both the acoustic foam and synthetic fur are made from materials which are specially designed and manufactured for the purpose, and as a result up to 25 dB of wind-noise reduction without any adverse effect on High-Frequency. In addition the foam is not susceptible to UV or moisture damage, giving this product great longevity.

Advanced materials, adhesives and assembly techniques all combine to make the Softie an extremely tough product that provides excellent wind protection in the harshest of environments.

The Softie Windshield can be purchased either on its own, or as part of a Kit, which includes a Windshield, Lyre shock-mount and Pistol-grip.

Softie Windshields come in two varieties of fur length, classic and short hair. The short haired Softie, known as the Camera-Mounted Softie has closely cropped dark grey synthetic fur, offers lower profile and a more compact design without severely altering the efficiency of the Softie. It can also be mounted close to the camera lens without causing unwanted shadows.

The Softie Windshield is a slip-on open-cell foam, with integral fur cover. The Softie will reduce wind-noise, protect your mic and is the standard world wide in TV.
Finding the correct slip-on windshield will depend on the type, length and diameter of the microphone. Slip-on windshields are designed for cylindrical shotgun mics, ranging from 19-25 mm in diameter.

For any windshield to work effectively it must cover all the ports on the microphone. Therefore a 12 cm slip-on windshield would be suitable for shotgun microphones, with slots no further than 12 cm from the front of the mic.

The diameter of the microphone is also key, as the fit must be tight in order to achieve a good seal. Rycote slip-on windshields come in two diameter fittings, Standard (19-22 mm) or Large (24-25 mm).

Device Compatibility

  1. sennheiser ME 80 K3U
A short-shotgun capsule for use with various K-series power modules - measurements given with the K3U. [The K3U (XLR) or K3N (Tuchel) powering module had balanced output, the K1 unbalanced, and the K30AV was a transformerless o/p with multipin connector and non-standard powering.]
  2. sony ECM 670
A supercardioid short rifle electret condenser microphone. It has a low-cut filter to reduce ambient noise. It is suitable for mounting on Sony cameras and camcorders.
  3. beyerdynamic MCE 87vs
Short shotgun microphone for use with semi-professional and domestic camcorder systems. MCE87 has internal battery powering and similar electrical specification to MCE86.
  4. sony ECM 678
The ECM-678 is a short shotgun, electret condenser-type microphone for field production and broadcast studio applications. It is also intended for use on professional camcorders such as the HDV Series, DVCAM Series, and XDCAM Series. A built-in low-cut filter switch helps to reduce unwanted pop and wind noise encountered in the field.
  5. beyerdynamic MC 716

  6. beyerdynamic MC 736

  7. beyerdynamic MCE 86 N (C) S
The MCE 86 II replaces the earlier MCE 86/87 as a short rifle microphone for camera and general use. The construction and integral filter minimise sensitivity to wind and zoom motor noise. It uses an electronic output and can feed long cable runs. The basic version is phantom powered; the suffix S is phantom or battery, and can drive unbalanced XLR or 3.5mm jack inputs. The S version weighs 120g and is 310mm long.
  8. beyerdynamic MC 726
For more information on this specific microphone, go to the BeyerDynamic website at http://europe.beyerdynamic.com.
  9. sennheiser MKH 416
A short shotgun interference tube microphone for film, radio and television, especially for outside broadcast applications. The low-impedance capsule design makes it virtually immune to high humidity and condensation. Transformerless and fully floating balanced output.
  10. sennheiser ME 66 K6
Short shotgun microphone head designed for use with the K6 and K6P powering modules. It is especially suitable for reporting, film and broadcast location applications, and for picking up quiet signals in noisy or acoustically live environments, as it discriminates against sound not emanating from the main pick-up direction. Matt black, anodised, scratch resistant finish. Length shown is for head only.
  11. sennheiser MKH 418
The MKH 418 S is an MS stereo microphone. Its high degree of directivity makes the MKH 418 S the ideal choice for stereophonic recordings for reporting, film and television applications. It has two independent acoustic systems for generating the mid and side signals. The mid signal (M) is generated by a shotgun microphone system (based on the legendary MKH 416). At high frequencies, this results in a lobar pick-up pattern, whereas at low frequencies there is a transition to a super-cardioid characteristic. The side signal (S) is produced by a figure-of-eight capsule, whose positive side is directed to the left. The M and S signals are available independently at the microphone output. The S capsule sensitivity is 10mV/Pa and the self-noise is 22dBA.
  12. RYC079002 HC-22 Shotgun Microphone (22cm)
The HC-15 and HC-22 are high-quality hypercardioid shotgun microphones. Both of these mics offer performance equal to or better than many of the more expensive professional microphones, while also offering a self-noise level lower than almost any equivalent sized shotgun mic at any price.

How did we do it? We kept things simple.

The HC microphones are shipped with only a case — no mic clips, no foams, no other accessories. To reduce costs, we decided to minimise the packaging and shipping costs by not paying to send “air” across the world. We ask that you please find compatible Rycote foams, Softies, windshield kits, shock mounts and other accessories near you.

Our new microphones were designed in-house and are made at Rycote in our factory in the U.K. As such, we are able to utilise much of our current manufacturing and testing resources we use to make other Rycote products. Therefore our investment costs for production was not as high as if we had started making mics from scratch. This combined with a modular material and components design allowed us to create two hypercardioid mics cost effectively and pass on more value to you.
  13. beyerdynamic MC 836
Short shotgun microphone with low frequency roll-off switch.
